Sexual Citizen: A discussion with the authors

On October 1, 2020 at 4:30pm the Center for the Study of Inequality will welcome Jennifer S. Hirsch and Shamus Khan for an in depth discussion of their recent book, Sexual Citizens: A Landmark Study of Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus. Sexual Citizens lays out an expansive, empirically-grounded vision for campus sexual assault prevention, drawing heavily on interviews of Columbia and Barnard students to understand why sexual assault is so prevalent on college campuses.

The event will be held as a Zoom Webinar. Please register at the link below.

About Sexual Citizens and its authors:

Jennifer Hirsch is a Professor of Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health. Shamus Khan is a Professor of Sociology at Columbia. Their book, Sexual Citizens, is an outgrowth of Columbia’s Sexual Health Initiative to Foster Transformation, or SHIFT, co-directed by Professor Hirsch and clinical psychologist Claude Ann Mellins. Grounded in the intimate, often painful accounts of the human beings at its center,

Sexual Citizens is a bold and comprehensive analysis of a social ecosystem where sexual assault is a regular feature. It concludes with a bracing set of recommendations for what families, teachers, policy makers, and leaders in higher education can do to prevent it. A recent review in Science described Sexual Citizens as “profoundly eye-opening,” while SHIFT has been profiled in The New Yorker and other outlets.
