Bio: Thomas Cushman teaches at Wellesley College and is currently at work on a book, Why Freedom of Expression Matters, to be published in 2022 by University of Pennsylvania Press. His work over the past ten years has been on understanding the contributions of sociological theories and concepts to the understanding and protection of fundamental liberal rights and freedoms - freedom of thought, freedom of consience, freedom of expression, and what he has termed, "the right of individuality." He was appointed in 2019 to the United States Commission on Civil Rights, Massachusetts State Advisory Committee for a four-year term.
