Paula England
|
PAULA ENGLAND is Professor of Sociology and an affiliate of Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University (starting January, 2002). From 1999 to 2001 she was Professor of Sociology and later Director of the Women's Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania. She has also held faculty positions at the University of Arizona (1990-99) and the University of Texas -- Dallas (1975-89). She received her B.A. from Whitman College (1971, Sociology and Psychology) and her Ph.D. (1975, Sociology) from the University of Chicago. She has served as the editor of the American Sociological Review (1994-96) and as an elected member of the Council of the American Sociological Association (1997-2000). In 1999, Dr. England was awarded the prestigious Jessie Bernard Award by the American Sociological Association for career contributions to scholarship on gender. ---
Research Interests Throughout her career, Dr. England has tried to foster dialogue between sociology, economics, demography, and feminist perspectives on gender inequality. Dr. England has published in American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, Demography, Industrial Relations, Signs, Journal of Human Resources, and other journals. She is author of two books, Households, Employment, and Gender (with G. Farkas; Aldine de Gruyter, 1986) and Comparable Worth: Theories and Evidence (Aldine de Gruyter, 1992), and is editor of an anthology, Theory on Gender / Feminism on Theory (Aldine de Gruyter, 1993). Dr. England has also testified as an expert witness in a number of Title VII discrimination cases. |
